The RipStik, commonly misspelled as Ripstick or Rip Stick, is a caster board, which looks similar to a skateboard, but moves like a snowboard or surf board. Made by Razor USA, the recommended age is 8 and up. The Ripstik board only has 2 wheels, which swivel 360 degrees. Instead of a solid deck, the RipStik has two independently moving “deep concave deck” plates connected by a bar in the center. The rider of the Ripstik Caster (sometimes misspelled as “Castor”) skateboard can accelerate and turn without pushing off the ground. Instead of propelling the ripstik forward by pushing off with one foot, like with a skateboard, a Ripstik rider can simply mount the board and move forward by twisting or pivoting the deck plates creating a unique carving motion.
According to ConsumerReports.org, “RipStik was well-liked by most of our testers. Within minutes, the kids were able to get on and ride the RipStik. The consensus from the kids was that learning to ride a RipStik would take a few hours, and to get ‘really good’ would probably take a couple of weeks. Most of the kids were able to do simple tricks like wheelies after an hour or so... The kids, most of whom were relatively new to ‘boarding,’ told us that RipStik is extremely popular among all their friends and classmates.” (www.consumerreports.org, 2007).
If you are looking to buy a Ripstik, check the original Ripstik Caster Board, the Ripstik DLX, or the gold standard of Ripstiks, the Ripstik G.
